Buying the discounted Switch base game and downloading its free upgrade is the cheaper route among the Nintendo listings we checked. Existing Switch owners should start with the upgrade pack, not buy the full game again.

Which listing do you need?

The base-game sale deadline is not an announced expiry for the free upgrade; no upgrade deadline was shown. These are US Nintendo Account downloads, not PC keys, DRM-free files or physical cartridges. This is neither a free weekend nor a subscription-included base game.

What changes on Switch 2?

Nintendo describes improved resolution and frame rates, plus GameShare. The full-edition listing specifically identifies local GameShare and one to two players on a single system. Those are advertised features, not performance measurements from WupGames; we have not tested this version.

The underlying appeal remains the contrast between dungeon expeditions and looking after a settlement of animal followers. Combat supplies the resources for a community that demands your attention between runs. Cute character designs soften, but do not remove, its deliberately macabre premise.

Check ownership before downloading

Nintendo's upgrade guidance covers both physical and digital Switch copies. The enhanced features require Switch 2 hardware. Sign in with the appropriate Nintendo Account and check the required base game before completing the download.

Do not read “free upgrade” as “all paid extras included.” Nintendo continues to list Woolhaven and other DLC separately. Check each package's contents rather than assuming the upgrade grants expansions you never bought.
